Spermtogenesis Spermatogenesis is the process of sperm cell development and maturation that occurs in the testes of male animals, including humans. The process involves a series of cell divisions and differentiation steps that transform the original germ cells, called spermatogonia, into mature sperm cells, called spermatozoa. The process of spermatogenesis occurs in several stages: The first stage is the mitotic division of spermatogonia, which results in the formation of two types of cells, Type A and Type B spermatogonia. Type B spermatogonia undergo meiosis, which is a process of cell division that produces haploid cells with half the number of chromosomes. The haploid cells formed in meiosis are called spermatocytes, which then undergo two meiotic divisions to produce four haploid spermatids.
